US Space Force Statement: The Seal “Honors the Proud History of the Department of the Air Force”
WASHINGTON — President Trump unveiled the seal of the US Space Force Friday night on Twitter.
“After consulting with our top military leaders, designers and others, I am pleased to present the new logo for the United States Space Force, the sixth branch of our magnificent military!” Trump tweeted.
The image of the US Space Force seal drew instant mockery on Twitter due to its striking resemblance to the Star Trek emblem for the fictional space force organization Starfleet.
Several commentators with military backgrounds have pointed out that the US Space Force seal, with the use of the delta symbol, appears to be inspired by the actual space organization US Air Force Space Command, and it is likely that the creators of Starfleet were inspired by the AFSPC, and not the other way around.
On December 20, Trump signed the law that created the US Space Force by renaming the US Air Force Space Command and making it a separate military service.
Social media posts have noted that the design of the US Space Force agreement is a nod to the tradition of retaining a connection to the organizational emblem from which the new unit is derived.
A U.S. Space Force spokesperson said in a statement late Friday that the seal “pays tribute to the newest armed service that organizes, trains and equips space forces to protect U.S. and allied interests in space.” and to provide space capabilities to the joint force”.
In response to critics calling it a Star Trek rip-off, the spokesperson said the US Space Force seal “honors the proud history of the Department of the Air Force” in providing space capabilities.
The delta symbol, the central design element of the seal, was first used as early as 1942 by the United States Air Force and was used in the first emblems of the Army Space Organization. air dating back to 1961, the spokesperson said. “Since then, the delta symbol has been an important feature of military space community emblems.”
Star Trek made its television debut in 1966.
