Star Trek: Prodigy Reveals the Biggest Threat to Starfleet

While most of Star Trek: Prodigy is outside of Federation space, the animated series unveils a massive disaster heading straight for Starfleet.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Episode 10, “A Moral Star, Part 2,” streaming now on Paramount+.

For a large part of Star Trek: Prodigy, the animated series was largely set in the Delta and Gamma Quadrants, far from the jurisdiction of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet. While the familiar species and legacy of the wider Star Trek universe has certainly been felt throughout the series – particularly through his beached Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar – Dal and his friends have largely enjoyed existing in their own corner of the galaxy. . However, the Protostar itself could be the starship that dooms the entire Federation if the evil diviner’s master plan succeeds.

Possessing the experimental Proto Drive, powered by a fledgling star in its engine core, the Protostar is potentially the fastest starship in Starfleet’s vast armada. Originally commanded by Captain Chakotay, Kathryn Janeway’s trusted first officer throughout Star Trek: Voyager, the ship was boarded by the Diviner’s robotic right-hand man, Drednok. And though the Diviner lost control of the Protostar on the harsh mining planet of Tars Lamora for more than a decade in the meantime, he still managed to implant a secret device on the ship that could completely dismantle Starfleet from power. inside.

The Furious Diviner from Star Trek Prodigy

As Gwyn is about to regain control of the Protostar from her twisted father, the Diviner reveals that he has implanted the Protostar with a device designed to infiltrate and corrupt the systems of any Starfleet ship he encounters. This corruption results in ships turning against each other, as well as the destruction of the Federation at the hands of its vast fleet. However, although the Diviner is defeated and left behind on Tars Lamora, Gwyn’s mind is erased from this revelation, leaving her oblivious to the danger the Protostar possesses as the equally oblivious Dal pilots it back to the space of the Federation.

This is certainly not the only time in STar Trek the story that Starfleet ships were turned against the Federation. the Star Trek: The Original The series episode “The Ultimate Computer” saw a sentient program take over the Enterprise and attack other starships with deadly results until Captain Kirk outmaneuvered it. The first season of Star Trek: Picard was shaped by Federation androids supported by a far-reaching Romulan conspiracy, devastating Mars and leading the Federation to ban synthetic life and programming for years until the Romulan conspiracy was revealed by Jean- Luc Picard and his new crew.

When Gwyn learned of what the Diviner had planned, she immediately realized that the Protostar could never travel to Federation space due to the immense risk it presented. This risk is likely due to how the ship was hidden on Tars Lamora, with Captain Chakotay potentially hiding it on the planet after learning what the diviner had planned. However, this threat is still very active and heading straight for Starfleet.

To make matters worse, the Protostar’s spacecraft signal has been detected by Starfleet, which is also unaware of the danger heading its way. The Diviner may be defeated, with control of the Protostar wrested from him by his own daughter, but his ultimate victory may yet materialize as the Protostar’s new crew plays boldly into his hands.
