The US Space Force unveiled its official motto and logo on Wednesday, July 22, along with the meaning of its striking insignia.

On January 24 of this year, an image was revealed that many believed to be the US Space Force logo. However, it turned out that this design is actually the seal of the new military branch, not the logo. But on Wednesday, the branch rolled out the official logo, US Space Force motto, and logo design meaning (and no, despite its Delta shape, it’s not “Star Trek” inspired.)

Starting with the official motto: Space Force now operates under the words “Semper Supra”, which in Latin means “Always Above”. This motto, like the military branch explained on Twitter“represents our role in establishing, maintaining, and preserving the United States’ freedom of operations in space.”

The logo is a pointed Delta symbol.

“First used in 1961, the Delta symbol honors USAF heritage [United States Air Force] and Space Command,” says an infographic released by the US Space Force in a statement.

The Delta symbol has a silver outer border which, as the infographic describes, “signifies defense and protection against all adversaries and threats emanating from the space domain.” Just inside the silver lining is a black inner border and inner region, which “embodies the vast darkness of deep space”.

The internal structure of the logo includes four silver “bevelled elements”, which “symbolize the joint armed forces supporting space missions: Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines”.

The two sharp arrowheads that line the inside of the logo “depict the action of a rocket launching into the outer atmosphere in support of Space Force’s central role in defending the space domain”.

Finally, the military branch explained, at the “center of the delta is the star Polaris, which symbolizes how core values guide the Space Force mission.”

The Space Force was officially created in December 2019. It is the first new US military branch to be created since the Air Force took off in 1947.
