Good day Star Trek. Starfleet arrives in New Jersey

On this day in 1966, the first episode of “Star Trek” aired on NBC, bringing Captain Kirk and a salt-hungry alien shapeshifter to homes across the country.

Although Star Trek Day festivities have mostly centered around September 8, the party continues in New Jersey this weekend.

Just days after the 55th anniversary of the long-running William Shatner show, James T. Kirk himself will be boldly going where he’s actually gone before: a sci-fi convention.

The Sci-Fi Summit heads to the New Jersey Convention and Expo Center at Edison with a full lineup of Trekkie-centric programming.

Shatner, 90, will be honored at the event along with his former co-star Leonard Nimoy, who died in 2015, and “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991.

Anthony Rapp, who plays Lt. Commander Paul Stamets in the Paramount Plus series ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and is a Broadway actor best known for playing Mark in the original production of ‘Rent’ (and the movie), will host a concert Saturday night at the event.

Joining Rapp on the three-day convention lineup will be “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Picard” star Jeri Ryan and “Star Trek: Discovery” star Wilson Cruz (of “My So-Called Life “).

The sci-fi convention, which promises costume and quiz contests, collectibles and merchandise, will also host cast members from ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Orville,’ ‘The Umbrella Academy’ , “The Flash” and “The Expanse”.

Here’s the schedule of “Star Trek” related appearances:
